Emoji Algebra

How Emoji Algebra works

Emoji Algebra is free, browser-based algebra practice for kids around grades 4–5. Every puzzle is a small mystery: emoji stand in for unknown numbers, and clue equations reveal them.

Crack clues, then answer

Each puzzle shows clue equations on a chalkboard — like 🍎 + 3 = 10 — and a target to find, like 🍎 − 2 = ?. Work out the emoji's value from the clues, then type the answer and check it.

Feedback is instant: a correct answer celebrates and moves on to the next puzzle; a wrong one nudges you back to the clues.

A chalkboard you can actually use

The chalkboard is not a picture — it is a real algebra workspace. Kids learn equation moves by doing them:

  • Drag a term across the equals sign and watch it flip — 🍎 + 3 = 10 becomes 🍎 = 10 − 3. That is balancing an equation.
  • Tap the sign between two like terms to squish them together — 10 − 3 becomes 7. That is combining like terms.
  • Drag an isolated emoji onto its twin in another clue to merge two equations into a new one. That is substitution.

Every move keeps the equation true, and undo makes experimenting safe — so the board is a place to think, not just to answer.

A tutor that shows up at the right moment

Professor Hoot, the built-in tutor, walks new players through their first puzzle, then offers hands-on chalk tricks that teach each chalkboard move on the real board — the player performs the move, and the lesson advances by itself.

New mechanics get a one-time tip when they first appear, and after a couple of wrong answers the tutor gently points back to the clues. Tutorials never block play: they can be skipped at any time and replayed from the Tips button.

A learning path with six worlds

130 puzzles are organized into six worlds, each focused on one idea:

  • Warm-Up — Solve for one unknown in short addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations.
  • Times Table Trail — Multiplication-table thinking: repeated symbols, copies, and factors inside small equations.
  • Clue Detective — Two unknowns, two clues: combine equations with sums, gaps, and substitution reasoning.
  • Order Ops Arcade — Order of operations and grouping: choose where parentheses belong and how they change the result.
  • Pattern Quest — Growth rules and staged patterns: reason about how values change between steps.
  • Master Mix — Mixed review of equations, comparison, grouping, and pattern reasoning.

Free, instant, and private

Emoji Algebra runs in the browser — no account and nothing to install. Progress and the last visited puzzle are saved on the device, and every world and puzzle has its own shareable link.
